INDOOR SOCCER LEAGUE HAS SUCCESSFUL KICK OFF

Newport News FC is proud to bring winter indoor soccer to the peninsula. In January, the club kicked off the indoor league with over 150 club players participating in weekly games played at Dozier Middle School. The action has been fast and fun to watch with 50 goals scored in first week of the season. We anticipate that each year this league will attract new teams and will provide our players the competitive edge they need to succeed on the soccer field. Coaching Director, Al Cousineau had this to say about the league, “the main benefit to playing futsal is that it demands players improve their individual passing and dribbling skills and shooting skills and forcing them to become quicker decision makers on the field, I am confident that this league will enable our players to reach the next level faster."

Team Work Lessons We
Can Learn From Geese

When you see geese heading south for the winter flying along in a “V” formation you might consider what science had discovered as to why they fly that way.

Fact: As each bird flaps it’s wings, it creates “uplift” for the bird immediately following. By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock has 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.

Lesson: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

FACT: When a goose fly out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone. It quickly gets back into formation.

Lesson: If we have as much common sense as a goose, we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go. WE are willing to accept their help and give our help to others. It is harder to do something alone than together.

Fact: When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation, and another goose files to the point position.

Lesson: It is sensible to take turns doing the hard and demanding tasks and sharing leadership. As with geese, people are interdependent of each others skills, capabilities, and unique arrangements of gifts and talents.

Fact: The geese flying in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep their speed.

Lesson: We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater. The power of encouragement (to stand by one’s heart or core values and encourage the heart and core of others) is the quality honking we seek. We need to make sure our honking is encouraging and not discouraging.

WHAT HAPPENED TO SEVYSA AND WHAT IS THE VSLI?

Last Fall our old league formally know as the Southeast Virginia Youth Soccer Association changed its name to the Virginia Soccer League, Inc. or VSLI. What this means to Newport News FC members is that we now have a better league for our teams to compete in. The new league (VSLI) now includes some of the other top clubs in the state including: Chesterfield United, Tri City, Richmond Strikers and the Richmond Kickers just to name a few. Al Cousineau, Director of Coaching, had this to say about the change. "I am very pleased that our teams and players will now have even better teams and players to play against. In short, this will definitely benefit every player in our club. I have also been elected to the board of Directors for the new league and I am confident that any decision made by the league will work to benefit Newport News FC players."
