Amazingly, It Almost Never Happened!

A year ago, then Menchville coach John Byron came to Dillon Christopher, a sophomore who played soccer, to ask whether he'd be interested in trying out to be his place-kicker. Christopher had never done it before other than goofing around, but he gave it a shot.

He caught on quick. And when Christopher made a 45-yard field goal against Heritage, it was pretty clear this lefty had the goods.

In this season's third week, he hit a 50-yarder against Denbigh…and missed just wide from 53 a little later. But that's nothing compared to what happened on the final play of the first quarter Saturday afternoon against Kecoughtan.

With a good but not hurricane-like wind at his back, blowing more in the 10 o’clock direction than noon, Christopher drilled a VHSL-record 60-yard field goal. He had probably at least two yards to spare. It broke the pervious record of 58, which was shared by First Colonial's Jeff Heath (1981) and Park View-Sterling’s Chris Dawson (1988).

Previously, the longest in the Peninsula District was 52 yards by Bethel's Ronnie Booth in 1972. The longest in the area was 57 yards by Grafton's Jarod Brown in 2008.

The national high school record is 68 by Dirk Borgognone of Reno, Nev., in 1985.

"I've hit 67 in practice," he said. "Last week (against Bethel), I tried from 68. But things happen. I'm glad it was 60. It’s much better than if it was 59."

Christopher had made a 37-yarder earlier to cut the Warriors' lead to 7-3. He later missed from 50 when the wind was blowing more across than from behind.

Christopher finished the season with seven field goals, second in the district to Woodside's Chris Moller. Only a junior, he's already drawing serious recruiting interest from Virginia Tech. In fact, Christopher said he had guaranteed Hokie assistant Curt Newsome that he would make a 60-yard field goal before he graduated.

Christopher plans to take an unofficial visit to Blacksburg on Nov. 17 when the Hokies play North Carolina on a Thursday night.

And it all started with an invitation.

"I guess everything happened the way it was supposed to," he said.
